Buckle up, because you're about to hear about the best friendiversary that ever was.

Brianne and I figured out that this is the 10th year we've been friends. We met at her cousin's birthday party in April of 2003, and we thought it was probably on the 4th. So we wanted to celebrate, cuz hey, it's not everyday that you're best friends with the same person half your life right?

We couldn't figure out what to do and we threw around ideas, but I thought a casual day around home/town would be nice. Making food, maybe a hike.
But then something happened inside me that said, "screw it, let's go all out." And we went to Joshua Tree.

It's a bit of a drive from where I live, but she brought a bunch of cd's to pass the time. First, we put in Maroon 5's Songs About Jane, because a. it was the cd that we always listened to as 12 year olds (why were our parents letting us listen to that wow) and b. it's a freakin great cd. So so good. We decided we should become a Maroon 5 fem cover band. Then we listened to Hot Fuss by the Killers, because that was another cd from our childhood.
As we drove through the desert listening to these familiar songs, we made a list of the highlights of our friendship. We both couldn't stop smiling and laughing, remembering all of the good times. All the dumb things we did. We were so happy.

Before we got started, we stopped off at Sagebrush Press, a used bookstore in Yucca valley. It was small but completely packed with books, and I went home with a few.
Then we put in Fleet Foxes and headed down the road to Joshua Tree National Forest. Overall, we drove about halfway through the park, but it took several hours because we kept getting out to take pictures or climb on rocks.
In the midst of these Dr. Seuss trees on this weird alien terrain, we were in heaven. It was so stunning.

Finally we made it up to Keys View, which overlooked the Coachella valley. We didn't see out too far because of the weird haze (why won't it go away?!) but it was still such a beautiful view. We were up there for about half an hour, admiring it and trying to take standing tree pose pictures. Mountain selfies are hard.

Then the sun started going down, so we thought it was time to go home. Earlier, I had asked Brianne, "What are the odds-" and she interrupted saying, "of a good sunset? I would say pretty good."
There is no reason why she should have known what I was about to say, but she did anyways. Because we're best friends and we're on the same page and finishing each others sentences.
The sunset did not disappoint. It was unbelievable. We were just laughing and "just-ing" as we listened to Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes. Another incredible album. (Just-ing is when you drop everything and look, usually at scenery, and appreciate something. "Can we just?!")

It's sort of our thing to go to Panda Express and eat way too much orange chicken, so we ended the day with that. Another incredible day. Everything went so perfectly, it was hard to believe it was all real.

10 years. I know we were meant to meet each other then. We didn't know each other, but we both liked dogs and Spongebob and when you're 12, that's enough. It's truly a miracle that we're friends because especially during and after those formative teenage years, chances are that you're not going to like the person they become. I'd say we turned out alright. She is such a positive example and she not only encourages but helps me put things into action so I can be a better person. Here's to all the shenanigans we have gotten into. She is a light in my life. I am incredibly blessed.
